£1bn in investment for low-carbon engines research

Business Secretary Vince Cable announced plans on Friday for a joint effort between government and manufacturers to invest £1bn in a research centre, to develop low-carbon technologies, in a bid to find the successor to petrol and diesel.
The proposed research facility, the Advanced Propulsion Centre, will receive around £500m from Vince Cable’s department.
Vince Cable said to the Guardian: “With the next generation of vehicles set to be powered by radically different technologies we need to maintain this momentum and act now. Our industrial strategy will ensure we keep on working together to make our automotive industry a world leader.”
Manufacturers including Nissan and BMW have agreed to “explore potential for investment”, the Guardian reported.
